An important guest is coming to Thailand next Month. He has been Bangkok before. This time, he would like to have a short visit to Ayutthaya. It is Yo's responsibility to take care of him so we better get that area surveyed!
After reading tons of blogs, we found that Bang Pa-in Palace is a nice place to stop by on the way from Bangkok to Ayutthaya. Moreover, there is a famous restaurant just a few blocks from the palace. It is called "Ton Nam River View" (ต้นน้ำ ริเวอร์วิว). There you could taste the biggest grilled prawn in Ayutthaya province. How could we miss it?
The dining areas are pretty cool. They are literally floating on chao phraya river. One is on a boat, and the other is on a raft. Occasionally, the boat and the raft will swing gently as a speed boat or a ferry passes by. How pleasant and exciting that is! For the rest of the time, the water stays pretty clam, so you could enjoy your meal peacefully just as you are on land.
As soon as you step in Ton Nam restaurant, their giant juicy river prawns with yummy thick shrimp paste lining up on four or five charbroil grills along the passageway will definitely get your attention. This is their house special, and probably the reason why the customers are here.
Unfortunately, the price of grilled jumbo prawns keeps rising. The current price is 1200 Baht to 1500 Baht per kilogram. This is a 500 to 600 Baht rise compared to the price four years ago. After all, rare things are precious.
Yo and I ordered two large grilled prawns, which weighed about a half kilogram and cost us 750 Baht. In addition, we ordered stir-fried asparagus with shrimps and a grilled fish with soy sauce. The total cost of this meal was 1250 Baht. It was quite a lot but it was worthy indeed. The flesh of prawns and fish was very fresh and tender and all dishes tasted great.
By the way, it's not hard to place your order even you don't speak Thai. The menu is bilingual and the pictures on the menu is quite nice and clear. You could also place your order before you get a table. I think that is quite thoughtful. The only complaint is about their service. Do not expect too much.

The lime-scented hot and sour dipping sauce matches the grilled prawn so well! |
